Dumelo loses; Lydia Alhassan retains Ayawaso West Wuogon seat

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon in the Greater Accra Region, Lydia Seyram Alhassan has retained her seat in Parliament.

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Alhassan, who contested the parliamentary seat on the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) won with 39,851 votes.

Her main contender, John Dumelo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 37,778 votes.

The keenly contested election saw both candidates optimistic of emerging victorious.

John Dumelo earlier urged the public to dismiss reports claiming he is losing the seat to Lydia Alhassan.

According to him, “internal projections suggest that he is winning the seat”.

Lydia Alhassan had earlier said she will win the seat with 60% votes.

“They are appreciative of the work that we have done, and for me, I have been an MP for less than two years and they have seen my good works. My signature is all over the place and so for them, they are renewing my mandate and that of President Akufo-Addo,” she said.

Replacing her late husband Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko in January 2019, she contested and won the parliamentary seat for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

She won the 2019 Ayawaso West by-election with 68.80% of the valid votes cast while the other candidates, Kwasi Delali Brempong of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 30.52%, William Kofi Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polled 0.58 and 0.10 percent respectively.
