Ofosu Ampofo will not honour CID invitation – NDC

The largest opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) has stated that its National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo will not attend before the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Service today.

The CID has invited him again for questioning in connection with kidnappings and market fires.

The invitation letter to Mr Ampofo read in parts that: “The Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into cases of kidnapping and fire outbreaks in various parts of the country. Intelligence gathered indicates that some of these kidnappings and fire outbreaks are being orchestrated by unidentified groups, persons and individuals. Some of the persons picked up for interrogation and investigation have mentioned your name as part of a grand scheme designed to cause fear and panic in the country.”

The latest invitation comes at the time Mr Ampofo and the deputy communication officer of the NDC, Kwaku Boahen are facing charges of conspiracy to cause harm and assault against a public officer following a leaked tape during a meeting of party officials.

But the Director of Communications of the NDC Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi has said Mr Ofosu Ampofo has no assistance to offer the CID and will not go before them.

“This is a concocted, fabricated intelligence meant to harass him, we will resist this. The National Chairman of the NDC will not honour this invitation. The NDC is a law-abiding party and we respect our law enforcement agencies however we will not allow an obvious attempt by the Akufo Addo government to constantly harass our national Chairman. What is happening is what is described by the National Anthem as an oppressers rule, what is happening can be described as a tyrannical rule and as citizens of this country we must stand up against this attempt by the Akufo government to intimidate political opponents and suppress dissenting voices.”
