Postpone start of GHANA PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON – Yahaya Mohammed urges GFA president

PosCaptain of Aduana Stars, Yahaya Mohammed has called on the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kurt Okraku to postpone the resumption date for the new Premier League season.

This comes after the H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo lifted the ban on contact sports during his 17th address. In the speech, the president announced the Ghana Premier League and the Division One Football League will start on Friday, 30th October.

With the league being suspended since March 15th, teams and players have been desperate for the return of the league.

Speaking on AM Sports on the Joy News channel, Mohammed spoke of the need for players to first gain match fitness before the league could resume.

“The timing is very close because we have been home for a very long time. We usually use 30 days for pre-season. We are expected to train for three weeks and use the last week to play friendlies.”

The 32-year-old admonished the president of the Ghana Football Association, taking into the account the effects of the league coming back too soon.

“It’s going to be very difficult so if the GFA boss is hearing me they can push the start of the league to the middle of November so that we can use the whole of October for preparations.

“One month for preparations is enough because with the facilities in Ghana, it is very difficult to use two weeks to do physicals and other types of training. It is going to very difficult to get teams to play friendlies with because nobody wants to lose and nobody wants to get injured,” the Aduana striker added.

Various leagues in Europe have returned with protocols in place to avert the further spread of Covid-19. Mohammed believes that the lack of adequate facilities means Ghana will have to slowly bring football back.

“If they [GFA] can give us one month for preparations so that we prevent injuries then we will be happy. Europeans have all the facilities so they can use just two weeks for all their preparations. We are not in a rush, we have to gradually bring the league so we get the best out of it and make it attractive for sponsors as well.”

Aduana were top of the suspended Ghana Premier League with 28 points in 15 matches.
