Ejura killings: Culprits must be punished – Mahama

The 2020 Presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has pushed for those who will be found culpable for the killing of two protesters in Ejura to be punished.

A clash between residents and soldiers which ensued some months ago while demonstrating against the murder of social activist Mohammed Kaaka led to the killing of two persons and injury of several others.

An investigative committee report on the incident is due to be released soon but Mr Mahama insists culprits must not escape punishment.

The ex-President who is on a ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Ashanti Region speaking in Ejura on Sunday, indicated that the NDC will be watching keenly to see what government will do with the findings of this committee as it rejected most of the conclusions by the Ayawaso West by-election violence investigative committee.

“There’s a saying that impunity breeds more impunity, impunity breeds criminality and violence. The government rejected a lot of the recommendations of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Committee. We are monitoring to see what the government will do with the report on the Ejura killings. From the videos I’ve seen the operation was led by the Military with the police standing behind, they got down from their vehicle and started firing and hitting some of the demonstrators in the process. May the Almighty God keep their souls.”

Meanwhile, Mr Mahama led the NDC party to donate money to supporters of the party who were involved in an accident in Ejura while attending a rally ahead of the 2020 election.
